My wife and I (68 and 81) need short term health insurance to apply for Non Lucrative Visa for Spain. We will get an S1 once we have Spanish residency, so cover needed for about 6 -9 months until enrolled in Spanish medical system. No treatment for any life threatening conditions, just normal problems of ageing. Does anyone know a company who could provide this for couple of our age group?

You can use your S1 to apply for residency.

Can you, or anyone, provide either 1st hand or other irrefutable evidence that S1's are being accepted instead of private insurance when applying for the TIE?

Looking for a heath insurance provider who can provide cover for for an 81 year old man and 68 year old woman for one year to get Non Lucrative Visa. Cover must meet requirements of the visa. Both in good health, no life threatening conditions nor major problems other than usual symptoms of ageing, Cover required for one year only as we will get S1 and ultimately enrolled in Spanish medical care system

As far as I am aware, there is no policy meeting the six month or so criteria. They all seem to be one year, paid in full in advance (this is to defeat the previously common practice of people taking out insurance for this purpose and cancelling it the moment they have residency). They may not cover the 81 age group as a starting point, but there is an agency further south who does offer insurance for difficult situations. However, we approached them, without boring you with the details, and the price was ludicrously unaffordable, but if you are interested, I will try and find the details for you.

Many people on here swear by Alfonso of Gran Alacant insurances as he apparently very knowledgeable and helpful. Advert usually down the side of this page, he may be able to help you.

Many links are available...

https://upsticks.es/s1-and-the-non-lucrative-visa-2022-update/

https://myspainvisa.com/register-s1-form-spain/

"You may register S1 in Spain within 90 days before you move and start to live in Spain. If you are not applying for the form online, you can have the form sent to your UK address if you need it as part of your visa application to Spain."

https://www.ageinspain.org/post/non-lucrative-visa-nlv-guide

"If you are a UK national with a UK retirement pension, you can use your UK NHS cover, using an S1 form. Everyone one else needs to purchase private health insurance."

....Do you know of anyone who was unable to use their S1 as part of their NLV application?

Well said, Peter Pan!  I've lost count of the times I've posted this information - a member of this forum has even stated that they applied for and used their S1 to obtain their NLV, and still it's being questioned.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Boblux,

PeterPan is correct, you do not need private health insurance for your NLV applications - at 68 and 81, you should both qualify for an S1 from the UK as proof of health cover.  You need to contact the NHS Overseas Healthcare Services team - their contact details are available here:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/healthcare-in-spain-including-the-balearic-and-canary-islands#:~:text=You%20must%20register%20your%20S1,on%200044%20191%20218%201999.

Once you've received your S1, you have to register it online in the UK, and you'll be able to print off a receipt that you must take with you to your NLV application meeting at the Spanish Consulate.  As and when you've received your NLV and moved to Spain, you must visit your nearest INSS (health and social security) office to complete the process.

Kind regards,

Kim
