Hi all

We will hopefully be retiring from the UK to Javea in September, with a view to first renting, then buying a property.

We previously lived in Spain (Orehuela), and still have our green A4 Residence and NIE certificates. As we have lived in the Uk for 10 years now, I assume that only our NIE numbers would be valid. My question is: would these documents still be of limited use in applying for residency?

I would be very grateful for any assistance or information on this subject, and look forward to returning to Spain.

Only your NIE would have any validity. Your NIE is valid throughout your time in Spain.

Have a read of Jim's Guides which are in a tab at the top of the page as they contain all the information you will need. If you still have any questions please ask them on the open forum as this could also help other forum members, please do not contact Jim by private message.

When you moved back to the UK, did you make the necessary Baja por Cese declaration?

If not, your residency certificates may still be on the central register as valid.

On the register or not not sure how resurrecting residency would square with 10 years of missing tax returns.

Tread carefully is all I'm saying.

Thanks very much for your reply. I don't really recall. We did have to sign off from the Ayuntiamento and the bank, but I don't know what the Baja por Cese is.

We had to come back to the UK due to a family emergency, so everything was done quite quickly.

It's covered in my residency guide. You use the same application form as you do to apply for residency in the first place, but baja por cese is when you need to revoke residency. It avoids the possibility of the tax man chasing you for resident tax returns after you've left the country.
