Hello, It seems we have a harmless horseshoe whip snake in our garden wall. I believe in the Balearic Islands the authorities are lending snake traps to residents as this type of snake is becoming prevalent and destroying the lizard and gecko population. There residents can bring the snake to an appropriate new home. Is there any such programme in the Alicante area? Can anyone suggest a solution? This type of snake is not native to the area apparently. Thank you!

I would suggest you either go and ask at the Ajuntamiento in Xabia, or also Seprona which is the wildlife/animal protection arm of The Guardia.

Thank you. I would be interested to hear if any other residents have seen a snake disappearing into their garden wall or is this unusual?

Cannot say, but quite possible. We are in the campo, so quite a few committing suicide by vehicle on our lanes. Have seen now and then in the garden, but we’re surrounded by forest so not unusual.

Retreating to safety! Once you know it's gone I'd be inclined to repair that hole.

Doubt it's poisonous. I've sold now but used to have an apartment at nearby Los Lagos and arrived one day to find one waiting at the door for me. I shooed him off and he retreated downstairs to the garden! I don't like snakes and admit I  was slightly nervous!

I think there are quite a few on the south side of the Montgo, they like the terrain and the weather 😁

Not sure if it would work but maybe try half a can of Oro near the wall, and leading back to your house door. (Spray on the ground). I'm sure you'll want to know he's gone from your wall but I can't offer anything definite on that except to say it's unlikely he's living there.

Thank you. It is definitely a harmless horseshoe whip snake but I am concerned there might be more in the future and I don’t like the gecko and lizard population being decimated. I‘m not sure what Oro is …

Oro comes in a spray can, very strong, available in supermarkets, predominantly an insect killer/deterrent but your little visitor may dislike the smell and head elsewhere.
