Good Morning All,

My wife and I are looking to permanently move to Spain, La Florida where we already have a home.

However, as we are both on free prescription medication, Blood Pressure tables etc how would we need to deal with the obtaining of them in Spain. Would we have buy them over the counter or would they be free when we became resident. I assume that as and when we register with a Doctor he would obtain all our medical notes.

Can anyone clarify please.  Thanks Alan Clarke

If you want to live in Spain permanently you will need to apply for residency at the Spanish embassy while you are still living in the UK. You will need to prove that you have full private healthcare paid for a full year and meet the income requirements.

You will need full private healthcare as part of your residency application after which, if successful, you can apply for the S1 healthcare cover paid for by the UK government (assuming that you are receiving a UK government pension)

Private healthcare does not cover the cost of prescriptions.

Blood pressure tablets are available at all Farmacia outlets for around €3 for a months supply. You won't need a prescription for those tablets.

Steve Hi,

Many thanks for your speedy reply. Yes we are both receiving UK pensions, although we do not currently have Private Healthcare, but that can be arranged. I am on a cocktail of Blood pressure tablets as well as Statins etc. having suffered two heart attacks. Can these drugs also be obtained from the Farmacia without prescription?

Also do you know approximately how long it takes to obtain residency.

Many Thanks again

Stay Safe

Hi Alan,

I used to be on blood pressure and Statin tablets when I lived in the UK but since living here in Spain I have changed my diet and subsequently been taken off Statins and my blood pressure is stable (but still on BP tablets)

So...you can get BP and Statins without prescription at all Farmacia but I won't know about any other tablets you are taking.

To start the residency application you need to apply at a Spanish embassy in the UK, either in London or Manchester while you are still living in the UK. I understand that it's a lengthy process and you will need to prove that you have full private healthcare cover and be able to meet the income requirements. You will need to supply various paperwork related to marriage and police checks.
