Yep. Not far off double what you should pay. Think I paid around 120e but I kept the property solely in my name to avoid X2 costs for wills and tax teturns

Try Tim - We have used him a number of times, helping out with driving licences etc and his wife does Wills (not sure what she charges now but I am sure no where near what you have been quoted).  She certainly did our a few years ago at a very favourable rate.  I don't have her number but he will be able to help you.

For goodness sake, go direct to a notary and don't waste your money on an intermediary:

Your point about Brexit is a good one, and forced me to put on my thinking cap, so I had a quick run through European Regulation 650-2012.

The preamble says at section 38:

This Regulation should enable citizens to organise their succession in advance by choosing the law applicable to their succession.

My comment: We as citizens of Spain can choose the law. It doesn't say that it must be the law of a member state.

Article 22 says at para.1:

A person may choose as the law to govern his succession as a whole the law of the State whose nationality he possesses at the time of making the choice or at the time of death.

My comment: This is a bit more problematic, as it revolves around the definition of State. Does State mean any country of birth, or is it confining the applicability of the law to nationals of EU countries? State isn't included in the definitions section of the regulation, so I don't know for sure how it should be interpreted. However, the regulation mentions Member State over two hundred times. I'd therefore argue that, by not referring to Member State in the article, then it isn't confining its application to nationals solely of the EU, but to people of any nationality. This makes sense to me; otherwise the EU would have a law which applies to most, but not all, of its citizens.

Conclusion: Provided the regulation isn't amended, then the choice we have made or make in our wills shall still apply post Brexit.

I'd go in a bit stronger than that, Ray. In my opinion a Spanish will, with the clause about the law to apply to succession, is absolutely essential.

This applies whether you're resident here, or whether you have property or just a bank account here.

For €57, a Spanish will is a worthwhile investment for saving your chosen successors from either losing out altogether, or from having to spend a lot of time and money on being able to inherit your estate.

Friends have just been to the notary at la zenia, collected forms, filled them in, took forms back and appointment made. Attended appointment and completed task. English spoken, no problems, walked away with wills including paragraph about uk conditions, euros 44 each. I am told they were brilliant.

Just a quick question: are these wills purely in Spanish or is a translated English version also provided? Our lawyer charges €150 each, but says says he has the benefit of providing it in both languages. Thanks.
