Advice on the Processional Caterpillars

It's a little early yet it's usually around March when they are around. They are born in the pine trees so if you have a big garden check that there are no nests in your garden, if so I would consider removing them.

I would keep the dog away from wooded areas until they have gone, we find it safest to keep our lads on lead so we are sure where they are sniffing.

I have read on one of the La Marina groups that caterpillars have already been spotted out of  their nests, due to the mild weather some are out earlier than March. I would as Sleepdogs suggests stay out of the wooded areas and be vigilant when walking near pine tree areas as they are often seen marching on the paths. If you see any on the paths please don’t be tempted to ‘squash’ them as you will transfer their hairs onto your shoes and most likely into your house. I have been bringing my dogs for over 10 years and I am happy to say that we have avoided any incidents, however I would stress that if you think your dog has come into contact with them, an immediate trip to the vet is recommended. Apart from that enjoy walking your dog 🐕😊

Please be very careful as the caterpillars are already out! As already mentioned this is because of the warm weather that we have had so they have come out thinking its Springtime already.

Please keep Urbason 1mg to hand, it's an antihistamine recommended by vets, you get it from.the farmacia, and if the dog should be affected then give straight away and then get to the vet URGENTLY! If your dog should sniff or lick the caterpillars it will show signs of pain and irritation to its mouth and the tongue will start to change colour. A caterpillar can also project it's toxic hairs if it feels at threat so do not even allow pets or yourself to go close to them.

Not sure what weight your dog is but we were advised to give 2 tablets to our 10kilo dog.

Another thing to be aware of is they are in and around pine forests and any pine trees but they also can crawl a fair distance and get blown a fair distance to if it is windy so just keep your eyes peeled.

In would recommend asking your vet about Urbason and the correct dosage should you ever need it but pray that you never do.

Hi Nicola if you google processionary caterpillars it gives you lots of images of them, showing them marching etc. I have a pine forest at the end of my street and have often seen them marching in huge lines on the path and in the forest. The hairs from the caterpillars can also cause irritation in humans, if they come in contact with the hairs 🙁 Cathy

P.s I’ve tried to upload an image but for some reason I haven’t been successful...probably too early in the morning for me lol!
