Hi

We are looking to set up a pet sitting group where like minded people will help care for another person's pet. This may be due to holidays or even ill health.

The pet's owner would provide food to cover their pet's stay.  The aim being that this favour would be returned.

What do you think?

During our 15 years living in La Marina, my wife & I did a lot of pet sitting.

I think that your idea is a good one, and I wish you well, but I would just sound a little note of caution.

I think that before anybody agrees to sit someone's pet, they should go to their place and meet them for a friendly chat, because it could just be, for example, that they intend to do a bunk and can't/don't want to take their pet, and you will be saddled with the job of finding a home for, or adopting, a pet that you thought would be with you temporarily. If you talk to the owners, it's very easy to tell, amongst other things, how much they love their babies.

I speak from two bad experiences, one where we very nearly ended up with a dog permanently, and another where we would not have agreed to sit the two dogs if we'd have gone to meet the owner at her house beforehand.

All quite unlikely I know, but it DOES happen.

I hope your idea takes off.

Geoff.

Hi I think it is a great idea, I am constantly amazed by the lack of "just helping" each other in the British community, having lived in several countries where there were no "English" people I have always had help with papers, translation, car rides etc for a returned favour or just "because"  from the people around, I often wonder at the thinking behind the nation, we should be able to help each other without constantly looking for return.

If you set up this system then I feel it is a good thing and if someone abandons there pet then shame on them and with help you will sort out the situation and I hope feel sorry for those who have felt they must leave what would have been a beloved pet. / Fiona S

Do you still have this in mind?

I am a registered dog breeder & parrot breeder.I think you need to be very careful entrusting your pet to a stranger who probably has no experience with animals other than attending to their own pet.I have bred & trained German Shepherds as well as owning toy breeds, yet know that you must be aware that, like humans, animals differ in habits greatly. And to add to that some owners have very badly trained pets that they dote on,& as my sister does, thinks it is "being naughty".It is the reason that Boarding Kennels have double enclosed kennel spaces & are regulated. What comeback would you have if your pet,cat or dog, goes missing, becomes unwell for some reason & this is not picked up by the carer,or even bites a child in the foster home? This idea is very nice & understandable & can work, but you must ask yourself if you are prepared if things do not go according to plan.I do not want to discourage you in this but please do think carefully about all aspects. As an afterthought,I would never ever leave Korky,my African Grey parrot with ANYONE else. She was responsible for giving a bad bite to a member of the Guardia Civil after uttering her favourite phrase"Give us a tickle" & bending her head. And he did. Nuff said.
