It’s always been my dream to live in Spain, and now my children are adults living with their partners and sadly my mum has passed away it’s time for some me time but I’m so worried about doing the big jump and if my family need me, how would I be able to get to them if we were in lockdown again. How are people coping living there with families back in the uk? I was out in February looking at properties and due to come back out in October to have another look, but I am really worried so any advice would be great please. Also I’m thinking of renting first to see how things go so will need a property with a garden for my retired guide dog(she was my mums they retired her to me when my mum passed so she is a beautiful laid back 10 year old lab). Really was so excited about my new life over there but the dreaded virus has just put a huge spanner in the works and so many obstacles, I know I’m strong enough to do the move but just looking for reassurance, so I just wanted to see how your all coping with family in the uk? Also if anyone had any properties to rent from November onwards till I decide if and when to buy

Thank you so much

Natalie

Natalie,

I'm assuming you are a UK citizen and not of retirement age ? If not the following is of little use... :)

To secure rights to future healthcare and pension for "to receive in time" a UK Pension you need to be a Spanish resident prior to the 31st December 2020. The rules all change on 1/1/2021 and we don't know what they are yet.

To obtain residency you either need to be working in Spain (with a valid employment contract) or, as in my case. fund via self sufficiency (savings etc).

If you are self funding, then you need to prove savings / income to ensure you won't be a burden on Spain's social system and healthcare via private health insurance. The funding is expected to be 3 months of appropriate history in a Spanish bank account.

Renting first is the correct approach and if you do it this year it's going to be easier for you and your dog as dog passports expire at the end of the year.

Good luck with whatever choice you make.... we move to Spain in less than 2 weeks...

Hi. If you use Facebook I recommend joining the group “Ladies of Spain” where such questions as yours are often posted and responded to.  It is a friendly , supportive Spain wide group of ladies who often run local social events too.

Hi Natalie,

I am in a similar position to you I think.  I have a long held dream of living in Spain and are able to achieve this now due to my now grown up family and the UK work situation well in hand.

My first step this year was to rent a long term apartment on a rolling 12 month tenancy.  I will only be able to use it for 6 months for the next year and maybe even less due the current restrictions, this will give me time to make a well informed decision when I decide to buy a place in within the next 2 years.  I am due to visit Spain in September for 2 months and have made my next job to make an appointment with a local Solicitor/Accountant.

I am also finding the first few steps very daunting as there seems to be a whole load of red tape to try and work through. However, this forum seems to have lots of genuine advice and information to help guide me through.

My post is probably not much help to you but at least you know we newbie folk are all in the same boat :-)

Ian
