Hello we have just moved up to La Marina and have a dog. We have a lot of pine trees in front and behind our house and we are Worried about the dangerous caterpillars.

What time of the year should we avoid walking the dog in these areas as we have been given conflicting advice.

thanks in advance

Hi,

Look out for their nests which look like small balls of cobweb. You can get traps to put around the trunks but if you have a lot of trees this could be expensive as the kits are around about 20 euros each.

Generally speaking they seem to go to ground between January and March

When is Processionary Caterpillar Season? Between December and April, the larvae will make their way to the ground to pupate and eventually turn into moths between May and July. It is during these months that pets and young children are most vulnerable.

They are already coming down in the Teulada region so be aware. If you can get to any nests spray them with hairspray and cut them off into a sealable plastic bag and dispose
