Do Spanish banks charge for large transfers in? I seem to remember someone saying they transferred the money in stages to avoid this, possibly max €50,000 at a time?

We closed our Spanish bank account down and pay all our direct debits using our wise account, so no more fees, and if you get the wise card, it’s accepted every where the same as any visa debit card, hope this helps

I opened a Sabadell Key account in person 5 weeks ago, on my lawyer's advice (for the bankers draft when I purchase). I was planning on keeping it for at least a year to see if it's worth having. Now I'm back in the UK though, I'm having serious problems with getting online access to the account. Their customer services are really bad - the issue (whatever it is!) is always "being looked at" but nothing happens and nobody wants to pick up the phone and discuss it with me. So my advice is, don't use them.

(Meanwhile, I'm paying fees for an account I can't use.)

I'm with Wise and they're very easy to open an account with and to use online. The debit card comes in handy when in Spain too - but beware of Caixa ATM fees, which were treble what Sabadell charged me for a withdrawal.

anyway, that's my tuppence worth ;-)

Hi

I use Wise for direct debits, but you won't be able to use them directly for buying a property because they don't support bankers drafts.

Cheers

Although legally all entities have to accept any EU IBAN number, you may run into difficulties with non-Spanish accounts (a lot of online forms don't even accept non-Spanish IBANs and phone numbers). You may have to press hard to have foreign IBANs accepted, so we found it quite convenient to have a Spanish IBAN. An easy solution could be a Spanish Nickel.eu account (you can pre-register online and pick the card up at lotteries or tobacco shops, search for "Punto Nickel" in Google), it worked for us as a quick fix. Other fintech companies also provide Spanish IBAN online. Of course you may use traditional banks as well, but that could mean some frustrating and time-consuming administration - and even then sometimes they refuse to open an account for no good reason. Traditional banks are also more expensive, so if you just need to take care of the utility and tax bills, it is not really a must to go with them.

You need to have appointment at the bank and go there.
