Hi Folks, my EE UK contract does not run out till August and although I know I can use my phone over there, I have been told that my phone service will be cut off after a month, because the free roaming is just for tourists and not for residents, I move over there in April, any thoughts or knowledge if this is correct, the info was from a young lad at the EE shop in the UK... Regards...Alan

I doubt your service will be ‘cut off’ as such, but your free roaming may cease. The easiest and possibly cheapest solution would be to obtain a new contract or PAYG with local provider - Orange (the origin of EE) are here as are most of the others. They all have varying types of contract, but be aware that Spanish contracts do not appear to include ‘texts’, hence the ubiquity of WhatsApp here, which nearly everyone uses. For an extra 1 x eu per month Orange let you phone UK landline numbers at no extra charge - but that's before Brexit has happened - or not, as the case may be. But not UK mobiles or 0800 or 0300 numbers, which I did not realise until I got the bill!!!!

You’d probably have to get a Spanish number as whether retaining your existing UK one would be possible, I don’t know.

It’s not a problem, there’s loads of phone shops here.

Hi EE and other mobile providers have a stable links policy as below.........

While in the EU you must comply with EE's roaming fair use policy, including having a stable link to the UK. So, during any four month period you must spend at least two months in the UK or use your inclusive roaming allowances mainly while in the UK. For more info see ee.co.uk/fairuse

My Virgin Mobile sim card has always worked perfectly in Spain, including unbroken periods of at least six months.

Three Mobile once pulled the plug on me after two months in Spain, but that was back in the days before roaming charges were cancelled.

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for the reply, but do you still get the data in that period or is it just calls and text, with my EE contract I get 10KB of data, so I don't need Wi-Fi, perhaps it is the data that EE cut off after a month ?

Well, I'm not sure!

My data didn't work in Spain, but when I rang Virgin about it they were adamant that it should, and there must be a fault with the Spanish network!

Unfortunately for your question, I didn't pursue it, because I also had a Spanish sim which worked perfectly.

Geoff.
