We are non-residents and have a holiday home in La Marina. We are looking to purchase a small car as a run around when we are here. Can anyone offer advice on the best way to do this and what are the regulations we need to be aware of. Many thanks

The car dealer up by the petrol station as you come into La Marina from the northside is pretty good, has a good selection of cars at various prices and they can handle everything to get you on the road.

You don't need a permanent address. I've haven't, and have just bought a new car. You will need,

NIE number.

Copy of driving license

Copy of passport

Copy of a utility bill with your name and address, less than 3 months old.

Regards Kenneth.

Hi Linda

From a different viewpoint...... the cost of a decent secondhand car and a new one is sometimes very little. We chose new as I felt it offered both better value and improved confidence. Accepting even new cars can have problems, my Spanish is not good enough to be summoning help for a breakdown 🤪🥂

Hi Gordon

Padron should not be necessary, tho’ they may ask for one. Although some Ayuntamientos issue them, they are technically for permanent residents. We were however asked for the deeds to our property. They will need to know where you live, if only to ensure that they get the car tax! 🤪🥂

Buy privately, go to a gestoria and they will do the paperwork.  175 euro or near that cost.   When you take out insurance check they have a help, urgency contact number in English.  They usually do.

Don't forget you now need to show insurance documents when getting the car ITV d.

Most garages will take the car for you for a small fee.

All quite easy.

I have a holiday home too in Spain but I was told I need a Spanish driving license to drive a Spanish registered car owned by me. The only exceptions are hire cars or cars on lease/purchase as they are classified as long term rental. Is this correct?
