Hi to the experienced forum.

I'm looking at buying a car from someone/trader in Ibiza.

We have agreed on a 50% deposit and I will pay the rest when it is delivered to alicante airport. They have stated that they will have all the documents there that I can take to my gestor (haven't got one yet if anyone can recommend) and get it transferred.

I have had a car in Spain before but it was all done by the trader and it was more local to the Urb so no worries.

Can anyone offer advice and if it is an easy thing to do.

I just felt a little bit uncomfortable paying the 3k up front.

The alternative is for me to go to Ibiza and collect it, catch the ferry and then drive to la marina.

Any thoughts or advice?

Thank you.........Glen

Before buying a car privately it would be wise to get an 'informe' from DGT, giving details of the car and owner, and whether there are any outstanding charges on it.

I haven't got time to check properly, but off the top of my head you'll need:

Contract signed by both parties.

Copy of seller's ID and original of yours.

Permiso & Tarjeta

Copy of receipt for payment of car tax

Possibly the paper part of the ITV

Application form downloadable from DGT

Bear in mind that you'll have to pay the transfer tax at Agencia Tributaria before you go to Trafico (after getting an appointment) to do the transfer.

You can find the current official book value here:

https://www.boe.es/boe/dias/2017/12/22/pdfs/BOE-A-2017-15284.pdf

As I understand it, the tax is 8% for a vehicle less than 12 years old and over 2000cc capacity, and 6% for smaller engines, but there are also other categories a vehicle could be in. On top of the transfer tax, there's the Trafico fee of €54.

If you and the seller don't already have a sample contract from which to produce the compraventa - purchase & sales contract - there are several examples on the web. Just Google:

"CONTRATO DE COMPRA-VENTA DE VEHÍCULOS USADOS"

One thing I haven't mentioned is that if you're buying from a garage or car dealer, then they normally do the transfer and include the costs in their selling price. If that is an option for you, make sure he supplies you with a letter giving your permission to drive the car until it's in your name, at which point he will supply you with the new Permiso and Tarjeta.
