Golden Visas are available to Brits from Greece, Cyprus, Portugal & Italy. These allow people from England etc to buy a property for a little over £200,000 and be allowed to stay in your property all year, travel freely in the Schengen  zone and possibly gain a pathway to EU citizenship. If Spain doesn’t look at this option they are going to lose out big time. Susan Lawson (home owner La Marina)

Hi Susan,

Spain does offer a Golden Visa, but it's not one fixed figure and the options available vary for each EU country.

For example, Spain offers a Golden Visa based on several different investment opportunities:

  • Purchase real estate in Spain worth at least €500,000. The real estate can be one single unit or several, with an overall worth no less than €500,000.
  • Make an investment in the Spanish public debt of at least €2,000,000.
  • Buy shares in a company or make a deposit in a Spanish bank of at least €1,000,000.
  • Invest in a new business that will offer employment opportunities, contribute to scientific and/or technological innovation, and have a relevant socio-economic impact in the area where the business will be undertaken.

Kind regards,
Kim

Hi Kim,

Thank you for your reply but I do think this is too expensive for the average English person and would not be surprised to see a slow exedous from Spain over the next few years.

Regards, Susan

Hi Susan,

If you look at the countries you mention, using just one of the investment opportunities for comparison - real estate - the sums required are:

Italy  €500k

Spain  €500k

Portugal  €500k (or €400k in a low density area)

Cyprus  €300k

Greece  €250k

No surprise that BoJo's Brexiteer backers applied for their Golden visas in Cyprus more than a year ago.  One rule for them, another for us..... 😉

https://inews.co.uk/news/brexit/tory-donors-secret-applications-eu-citizenship-brexit-passport-reuters-377909

If there's going to be a slow exodus from Spain, I can't see many English thinking any of the above would be more viable options, especially if they already have property in Spain to sell first.  Spain's Golden visa may require a greater initial investment than, say, Greece or Cyprus, but it's only 2 hours on a plane (Covid permitting), so more accessible than the latter.  Time will tell 🤔

Kind regards,

Kim

As I was a bit bored while watching the snooker, I thought I'd start having a look at some "golden visa" options and their cost.

Totally irrelevant to what has been said above, but I was somewhat surprised you can get residency in Vanuatu for a donation of c$130,000!

Some interesting decision makers and legislation in some countries about this! I can't imagine the outcry in certain newspapers that would result in the UK if that were offered there!

Does this count for Scots, Welsh and Irish too?
