I am a UK citizen but have recently obtained an Irish passport due to my parents being Irish. Is my wife entitled to an EU passport by piggy-backing on my new EU status? Has anybody done this and can advise the procedure please? From what I've read, it looks like she needs to have lived in an EU country for a period of time. She has not done this and resides in Yorkshire with me!!

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

No she cannot change nationality, oh that were that simple!

With you now being an Irish passport holder it will be easier for her to acquire Spanish residence though.

A word of caution, if you are of an age and entitled to an NHS S1 for health care coming to Spain on your Irish passport could possibly compromise that so check it out before committing to anything.

Hi bpc223,

Your wife, as the spouse of an EU citizen, can move to an EU country as your dependant - this should give you all the information you need:

Kind regards,

Thanks Darro and Kim. Not thinking of moving to Spain, just sounding out the possibility of going there and saving queuing at Immigration by having EU passports. Looks like that's not possible for my wife without her living in Ireland for a few years and then applying for Irish citizenship. Grateful for your contributions, thank you.
