I am returning to the UK for a few days and need to hire a car for she short duration I am there,

I have exchanged my UK licence for a Spanish driving licence,

and have had conflicting reports of if I can use this licence whilst driving a UK rental car, or if I have to get an international driving permit at a cost of around 100€

any advice from anyone who has been over to UK recently and hired a car with a Spanish licence would be greatly appreciated,

I am a British Citizen but a Resident of Spain and hold the official TIE card,

Thanks Brian.

I am British, but Spanish Resident, licence, etc.

I rented a van last December in England (Enterprise) with my Spanish licence .... no problem.

I'm exactly the same as you, British citizen, Spanish resident, TIE, Spanish licence, I rented car from Sixt at Bristol Airport on my last trip back, no problem at all.

Hi

Thanks for your reply,

I thought that this would be ok but good to know from the fact you had no problem,

I think that this could be another case of certain agencies trying to make some extra euros with all the confusion with travel at this time.

Thanks for your helpful reply,

I thought there would not be a problem  but good to know from you that you had no issues,

Certain agencies trying to make extra euros in these difficult times springs to mind.

A couple of tips ... my Spanish licence was issued in 2019. This start date is the date shown on the front of the licence.

I booked my van online. When I entered the licence start date, I was not allowed to book, as I appeared to have insufficient driving experience.

The date(s) you qualified to drive in the UK are shown (by category) on the rear of the Spanish licence - you need to enter the date from the rear.

The people at Enterprise were familiar with Spanish licence categories. But, in case you encounter someone who is unfamiliar, it might be helpful to have the category details ...

Thanks for the tip,

I will  make sure of the details on the reverse of my licence

I'm currently replying to this from the uk with my hire car sat outside.

There are no issues getting the car with your Spanish license. The company we used said you should have held the licence for 2 years, but as we only got our Spanish licences last year (held a uk licence for 40 years), so it only shows last year as the issue date. However the guy at the rental desk just changed the date on the form and said it's fine. So no issues.
