Maybe I’m missing something.

If the cyclist is doing 20km/h and the speed limit is 20kmh…. there is no need to pass? Is there?

anyway, only Mercedes drivers should be allowed near cyclists as they have the appropriate gun sights on the bonnet to “line em up” 😏 and if the merc driver has a good co-pilot any cyclist out of direct sight can be got with a fling of the door 😂

I’ll get my coat.

Exactly right Beni - anybody cycling (or driving) at the speed limit of 20km/h shouldn’t be overtaken by anybody….👍

I didn’t say all cyclists are courteous - far from it - not all drivers are courteous or respectful to cyclists either? The mindset of many is that cyclists don’t pay road tax etc, and as such they should move out of the way and let the tax paying driver pass him/her….

It won´t be long before cyclists have to pay some form of tax. After all, cycle lanes are built solely for them and also maybe insurance of some form. A smile and a "sorry" is not enough to compensate for any damage caused to cars by cyclists. The car owner has to pay for that.

Ok despite me asking you all not to turn this into a cyclist v motorist debate which we are all tired of by now you have hijacked the post anyway. What a shame. I am turning off notifications of this thread now so have fun arguing on something you cant influence anyway.

Good. So have I. Just check with the authorities instead of asking others. You´ll get the correct answers there

Hi Yogited,

I did answer your question and, as BeniSnowbird has reiterated, if a cyclist is doing 20 kph, you can't overtake on roads where the speed limit is 20 kph - it really is that simple.

Kind regards,

Kim

However... the town halls can override the national speed limits by putting up signs if they see fit. So now I wonder if we have to know which are new signs put up and which are left over from before the new rules. :)

I think I'll be staying home for quite a while.

Hi Myra,

I've asked our Town Hall to advise whether they are allowed to vary speed limits set by national government - I can see a case for them being allowed to reduce speeds in circumstances specific to a local area, but not increase them.  I've also asked them to confirm when the road signage will be changed and I'll let you know when I receive a response.

In the meantime, I found this 1-page summary, which I think is helpful because it gives 'before' and 'after' examples of different road types.

Kind regards,

Kim

Well I was driving along minding my own business obeying the new 20kmh speed limit when I get overtaken by a mob of lycra clad terrorists who then nearly ran over a woman on a crossing, to make things worse they abused her for daring to use the crossing while they were cycling.

I totally agree with you.  In this area we get hundreds (literally) of fat Lycra clad old men storming round our small roads. They ride all over the road and they never move over to let you go past.  If you hoot them, having followed for miles, you get a torrent of abuse.

They will likely be doing far more than the new speed limits, but I suppose like all road rules they don't apply to cyclists who think the roads are solely for them.

If these arrogant individuals showed more courtesy to other road users, who pay for the privilege of using the roads, then they might get a bit more respect from car drivers.

Some hope.

Hi Classic man? You stated in your reply to Andy craig “I totally agree with you……” can you clarify exactly what you are agreeing with??!!
