My husband is diabetic

He does not inject insulin.

We have always bought his testing strips.

Have done for 8 years.

A neighbour has told him that he has type 2 diabetes, and gets his strips on prescription.

Anyone have any info on this please.

Gracias

Both my wife are t2 and we get test strips on prescription, and quite generous they are with them too.If your husband is in the Spanish health system he should get them too.

Yes, just ask doctor to add to your prescription. You'll have to buy your own needle pricks though.

Cheers

Yes I know.

Someone in their infinite wisdom told us we had to pay for sticks?

You'd have thought a Farmacia would have told us?

Gracias.

Is your husband at the age where he would receive free prescriptions on the UK, ie over 60?

If he is under 60 he would have to pay in the UK, unless he is receiving medication for his diabetic treatment/control, in which case he would have free prescriptions - whatever age.

If there rules are mirrored in Spain under the Spanish Healthcare agreement  with the UK then this may be why he’s having to pay for his strips?

If he is over 60, then disregard all of the above, it will be interesting to find out the reason why he is being charged !

He’s 73. My strong suspicion is that it is to do with the abilities of the previous GP, who may not have been perfectly au fait with rulings. We live in the back of beyond, with one peripatetic GP who serves 3 local villages and is available approx two hours per day to each area. We now have a new younger incumbent. The previous one, whilst as helpful as she could be, was nearing retirement age and when Covid appeared, after all the lockdowns, she was no longer around. The practice nurse no longer asks him to come for any form of test or check up, so I imagine the whole thing has disappeared into a black hole. However, as he has no problems, he’s not too bothered! I intend to pass this info on to him and will see what transpires in due course!
