Hi All.

We are now settling in to our new life in Spain and working very hard renovating our home and also taking Spanish lessons down at Speechless in Spain, which is very enjoyable.

However is is very apparent living on the Urb where English is very prevalent that we need to immerse ourselves with Spanish speaking people far more than we are doing currently if we are ever  to conquer the language. So my question is, are there any groups or meeting places where Spanish folks actively help us newbies learn more quickly the language and the culture of our new home.

Muchas Gracias

Steve.

Hi

I would think spend time in places that are typical spanish residents

The problem with urbs are that they are often full of people from all different places

Just do a little research on areas that are typical spanish, eat in spanish restaurants, pubs etc

Just be patient and explore

Enjoy spain,I wish I had never returned to UK

Good luck

The short answer is probably not. Firstly, no-one in their right minds would give up their free time to talk to a complete newcomer in Spanish. You would be totally lost and they would be totally bored. Ask youself if you would do the same in England to a complete newcomer who hardy spoke the language. Secondly, it's not an efficient way to improve your language if you're not already well-grounded..

You need to get the basics. Concentrate on completeting A1 level. If you haven't got an  A1 course book, buy one, there are lots to choose from (Actual, Prisma etc). You will then have been exposed to at least 750 words in Spanish and 3 basic tenses: present, going-to future, simple past. There's no substitute for hard-graft.

At the same time, ask at Speechless about Spanish conversation classes, that's a class with a native Spanish-speaking teacher (qualified and cerftificated) with foreign students, like yourself.

Find a good local Spanish bar and have lunch there 5 days a week. Same time (1.30pm), same bar, you'll soon get known and recognized, chat will follow.

Watch the News. 30 minutes, same time, every day, if you can. Don't worry about vocab, just watch and listen.

Immersion is fine, but be patient...your brain will rewire in its own time. Good luck.

Well done!  I tried very hard years ago but finally gave up!   Just a thought, visit as many markets and ask questions. This would be a small introduction for you. If you can understand what the sellers are saying then you’re half way there. Good luck.

Oh dear. I'm sorry to hear that you gave up. We are not at that pont yet but is sure going to be a challenge.

Thanks for your feedback.

Try watching Spanish TV. We watch La Promesa every day, sort of Downton Abbey in Spain. Especially the kitchen talk is usable!
