Hi There,

I'm interested in owning a home with a pool, can anyone tell me before I buy what are the hidden costs to owning a pool? Does it add to property tax and overheads? Are there serious reasons why more people don't have one when they live inland?

Any information would be great thanks!

I believe that pools aren't allowed in rural areas. People get around this by calling them water deposits, but there is clearly a risk to that approach. If you're buying a property with a pool then make sure it has all the proper paperwork.

Also, think twice before buying a property that has an empty pool. The weight of the water in the pool prevents the walls from slumping inwards, take the water out and the walls crack. At the very least, an empty pool will need re-grouting before being filled. The cost of filling a pool can also be quite high.

Pete.

Thanks for getting back to me Pete! Ya good point on the paperwork! I notice you're in Villamartin...whats it like living there? I'll be living on my own for a fair part,so I'm looking for a good expat community around 40's/50's age?I don't drive yet and it seems quite spread out in Gated Communities which is not for me...I'm fairly alternative(designer, artist, love all sorts of music, dancing but private) so bingo ain't for me,no offence to anyone!

We actually live on the Montegolf urbanisation, which is about a 5 minute drive from Villamartin Plaza, but is also close (by car) to La Fuente and El Galan.

I don't think I'd like to be too close to the Plaza as it gets very busy during the summer. I think you're quite limited if you don't have access to a car, as there are lots of things to see and do in the area, but you need a car to be able to get around.
