water bills
Hi, I have just had a bank statement which shows the water charges, do they charge for water even if there is no one in the property for months at a time. Would be grateful for any advice
thanks

There will be a standing charge even if you don't use any water, the details should be broken down on your bill. Best advice is register online to access your accounts and to get your water and electricity bills even if you are not in Spain.
Thanks John I will try and figure out how to do that
You will need your NIE and passport Numbers, speak to the Agent you bought through or your Solicitor, if they set up your utility services and ask for the contract numbers.
thanks for that, will email the solicitor now and find out, everyone is so helpful on here

You also pay, if I remember correctly €22/month for garbage removal.
I would also check you haven't got a leak from the meter to your property.

We have had extremely high water bills and only live here temporarily. If there is a leak between meter and our property is the water company obliged to come out and check this?
Easiest way to check for a leak is to make a note of the meter reading before you go out and make sure your washer and dishwasher are off and then read the meter later on when you get back in.
We have a holiday home on La Marina urb and our bill is usually 65 to 70 euros a quarter and doesn't seem to make much difference if we have been there or not.

patsyd - if there's a leak between the meter and your property, then it's your responsibility and you'd need to get a plumber in.
If you aren't here full-time, then when you leave turn the water off at the actual meter, so you'll only incur the standing charges.
If you've got a pool with auto-fill, then that will use quite a lot of water in the summer months.
