I’ve you lived in the UK for 1 year or more between 1980 and 1996 then the answer is almost certainly no, because of the risk of vCJD (mad cow disease).

I never knew that Pete.

Our Centro de Salud regularly holds blood donation sessions, but I'm too old. I never realised I wouldn't have been able to because of VCJD.

Yeah like Spain didn't have CJD!

In France they called it JCB coz they just dug big holes and buried the evidence while UK of course showed the football field size pyres every night on prime time TV!

Most countries outside of Europe have this ban on donations for anyone who lived in Europe during these years. I agree that it’s a bit hypocritical that European countries discriminate against each other in this way, but I think vCJD is still quite a worry for most national health services.

I can’t donate in the UK because I received a blood transfusion in the UK in 1989.

Pete.

Transmission of Variant CJD (vCJD) is the potential problem with blood transfusions however to put that risk into perspective according to the UK's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke:

Quote:

"At present, four cases of vCJD infection have been identified following transfusion of red blood cells from asymptomatic donors who subsequently died from vCJD."

Pretty slim justification for banning blood donations IMO.

I tend to agree, and the Blood Transfusion Service do say that the guidelines are reviewed from time to time, so that may change in future.

I guess the government are being over cautious because it doesn't want a repeat of HIV infected blood products situation from back in the 70's and 80's. But, I think there are probably more vCJD asymptomatic 'carriers' around than people realise, as it's not something that's being tested for in most post-mortem examinations.

About 15 years ago I read Bryce Courtenay's "April Fool's Day". This is quite a badly written rambling account of how his own son, who was a hemophiliac, contracted AIDS from infected blood products. It's quite a harrowing story, and despite being badly written it makes you realise that a repeat of this type of situation is something to be avoided at all costs.
