Hi all and many thanks for the add to the forum.  I was wondering if anyone had any information on English speaking care homes in the area or care generally.  My mum has enjoyed nearly 2 decades on the Urb but we are approaching the realisation that cannot contiue forever.

Currently the plan is to bring her home to the UK when it is absolutely necessary, but I still find it difficult to comprehend some of the companies in the UK haven't set up there when there are so many expats frankly getting old (aren't we all!).

I have asked around and searched the net but the best I can find are Spanish homes, and before I start planning her coming home to the UK I thought I would try here first.  She has early stages of dementia and so I am looking for care from assisted onwards.

Whilst on that subject I was recommended a company for care assistance - Marina Care I believe?  Are they any good for helping in the early stages?

Many thanks in advance!

I cannot speak to your immediate area, as we are further north, but there are certainly care homes within our region. The majority of them are Spanish run, extremely efficiently I may add, and many of them cater for multi lingual residents, ie they have staff who can speak some English, although a command of Spanish would help.

I had to find a home at short notice for my mother some four years ago. Initially she had to enter a large Spanish home, where the majority of the clients were Spanish, but the care was excellent, albeit slightly aloof as there were so many residents. She stayed there as a temporary measure until a space became available at her preferred Residencia, which has only around 20 residents. Most of the staff are Spanish, including management, but most of them speak some English, although my mother is bilingual. There is onsite physiotherapy, medical care ( onsite geriatric nurse, doctor on call) . The larger home had onsite hairdressing also. Auxiliares 24/7 although reduced numbers overnight.

The cost is currently about 2800 Eu per month, plus medication costs if applicable, plus any personal expenditure she may have incurred. The cost rose after the Covid lockdown and the current rise in general prices, electricity etc as there is underfloor heating which must be costing them a fortune. She has a private room and bathroom en-suite and is helped to shower daily as she is wheelchair bound. They would be able to cope with early stage dementia, but doubt the facilities could comply with very serious conditions, although of course they do care for certain chronic situations.

The previous home, which was large as I said, had a wing on the first floor dedicated to those unfortunate enough to be seriously mentally affected.

There is a very large facility on the outskirts of Benidorm , Ciudad Patricia, which has onsite care and also assisted living facilities and caters for a multiplicity of nationalities. The website is very comprehensive.

Thank you very much for the info - mum had a good grasp of Spanish but it seems to have been the first thing to go sadly, and much to her frustration.  She made a point of trying very hard in her early days!  She is a very chatty person so needs an "English" care home for want of a better word, I just wanted to ensure what I am hearing is right.

Hopefully she will have a good couple of years yet.  Thanks again.
