Good morning all.

We are having an issue with regards to registering with a doctor in La Marina. When we tried to register they rejected us as our GHIC cards had expired, when we tried to renew them the NHS have rejected the applications on the grounds we no longer live in the UK so we are now in a catch 22 where we need the cards to register but are being refused the cards. Any advice would be very welcome.

Perhaps we should add we have been in Spain for four months and are currently going through the residency precess.

                                  Many Thanks

I believe part of the residency process requires you to have private healthcare. After acceptance for residency and after living in Spain for 12 months you can apply for the Convenio Especial which enables you to access the local doctors and hospitals. Unless I’m mistaken you will have to access your private healthcare for treatment etc.

Can I ask how you qualify for state healthcare here in Spain?

Hi, thank you for your reply, you are correct we do have medical insurance and perhaps we were mistaken thinking that we could still register with a doctor who if required would issue a prescription etc. So that would also mean should either of us require a prescription we would have to visit a private doctor.

                                      Many thanks

Hi. I’m only 59 so I pay for access to the state system through Convenio Especial. If you are officially retired and receive the state pension you can register your S1 form and get healthcare for free out here.

Hi, we currently have private cover for the first year, and possibly beyond but we will have to compare the issues in the future.

                          Thank you

Hi yes. I had to make appointments in Guardamar for a year with my private healthcare provider before I could access local facilities after a year.

Your policy documents will give you details of clinics and hospitals they have contracts with, you can't just go to any private doctor.

Just be aware that if you do decide to cancel your private healthcare after a year, they require at least 2 months written notice of the annulment.
