If you have private medical insurance and need medical attention, you should go along to your nearest 'private' medical centre where staff will be more than happy to deal with you. Such centres have GPs but be aware they may not all speak English therefore if you do not have a good command of Spa...

...nish it is best to take a interpreter with you.

As already noted in other posts the GHIC card is not for permanent medical cover. See this link from Gov.uk;

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/uk-residents-visiting-the-eueea-and-switzerland-healthcare

When you have been officially resident in Spain for 1 year you can apply to join the Convenio Especial. You will pay a monthly fee dependant on your age. This scheme will give you full access to the Spsnish Healthcare System but you will have to pay for all prescription except specialist drugs issued only at hospital pharmacies. This link will provide you with further information:

When you reach UK state pension age you can apply for form S1, which you can then register with the Spanish INSS. This link will provide you with further information:

Thank you John, your advice is very much appreciated .

Yes, you will to pay the full cost of the medicine, until you reach state pension age. You can then apply  and register S1 form as explained in the post above. Normally this means you pay a maximum of 10% of the cost. Depending on your tax status your prescription could be free.

Thanks Graham, I wonder if I could ask a question (Something like how long's a piece of string) do you know the cost of prescription items in Spain, are items reasonable or expensive?

                         Many thanks

As you haven't named the medications you have been prescribed it is difficult to  put a costing on them. I take high blood pressure tablets and they cost 59c for a box of 10 or 2. 50€ a box of 60. I also take Simvisatin, which is obviously a statin, and a box of 28 costs in the region of 1€. If you Google your medications you will usually find an average price, make sure you add Spain in your search.  Please bear in mind quite a number of medications can be bought over the counter without a prescription. This is easily checked by taking your medication containers into any Pharmacy and staff will assist - I have done this. You should also be aware some medication in the UK is not available in Spain therefore in these circumstances you will have to have a doctor prescribe alternative(s) or the pharmacy may recommend an alternative.

Just for info, paracetamol, as with all medications, can only be bought in pharmacies and cost on average €2 40 for a box of 40 tablets.

Good information

And as addition to that always ask for the economy version. I keep all my empty boxes of  any  medicine  including paracetamol to show to the farmacia.

I pay 1.31€ for 40 x 650mg paracetamol, but the farmacia will try and sell you a pack costing 10€  or more if you just go in and ask for paracetamol.
