Hello,

My partner of 20 years has requested an S1 for health care when we come over in January. He is of pension age. I am not yet of pension age but was told by the team in Newcastle that I could also get my health care as his dependant. We are not  married.

We have appointments for residency in February in Elche. Does anyone know if this is acceptable. Thanks

All the authorities are interested in is that you've got an S1 - the basis on which it was issued doesn't matter.

True however to piggy back onto someone's else's S1 DWP require you to be a true and legitimate dependant of that person however regardless of what it may have come to mean in the modern vernacular the plain truth is that 'partner' is a term devoid of any meaningful definition - and crucially any legal standing - and of itself absolutely does not mean that one person is a dependant of another.

As I recall the application form for an S1 for a dependant includes a question as to the actual relationship with that individual and stating 'partner' will not cut it so based on the limited information provided it sounds quite probable to me that your upcoming residencia application will have to be accompanied with evidence of private health cover.

Our friends did exactly the same and he got her on his S1 with no problem at all, they asked him if he had anyone he wanted to add, so he added his partner and she is 11 years from retirement,

Hmmm.

Not doubting your story however on that basis what's there to stop any unattached S1 recipient from picking up the first Brit under retirement age man or woman he or she finds on the street in need of health care and nominating him/her as their 'partner'?

I mean no offence by that just pointing out that it cannot be that simple and that DWP must surely require some valid justification for calling an otherwise non related person a dependent and issuing them with an S1.

I know it sounds crazy but it is true, they do live together and they have become residents now.
