Hi everyone,

We are considering buying in la Marina. Ideallly we would like to fully relocate but my husband is in construction and as I understand work is pretty thin on the ground. We have two properties one of which we are going to sell in order to fund our new home in Spain.. the other would pull in about £1200 a month rental yield which would be a good supplement to any income alternatively if decided to stay long term we could sell and invest it in to a new business. I have 4 children, my eldest is just doing his GCSEs atm and the rest are primary school age. All of us are (or attempting) to learn Spanish. Just looking for advice on how to move forward. I want a better life for my children than England offers not work opportunities but lifestyle and I think Spain could offer that for them. Ive have lost all my family in the last 4 years so no longer have any ties in uk and my husband is from USA originally so wouldn’t miss uk partially.

Everyone’s dream has to start somewhere

Thanks for reading

Becki

Hi Becki,

Best advise I can give is,not to start looking at buying a bar,as I tried with a partner a few years back, and found nothing but hard work 18 hour a day ,and the licensing trade in Spain is not good if your English.

Everything is against you,ad you will definitely end up out of pocket, but having the rental from your uk investment looks really promising, and the cost of living in Spain is half the cost of uk, your live ok

Be lucky

Dave

Thanks so much for you reply I totally agree with how hard it must be, I have thought about it but I have thought just how hard it would be. I was thinking along the lines of a cafe that sold alcohol but now I will rethink. Thanks so much taking the time to reply. Much appreciated xx

Hi Beckie,

Just to add, when I first went to Spain,to visit a friend in La Marina, I looked at a few places, that was twenty years ago,and my friend had been there for 15 years at the time, and he was moving to Almeria, I did ask him why the move,as he was getting older, and he told me that he was fed up with tourists in the summer months mainly parking everywhere, even over his driveway.

It’s so commercialised it was getting him and his wife mad, so be warned about La Marina ,and I am in the process of purchasing in Beniarbeig near Denia just out of the way enough not to have that problem,as I can easily get to the coast, but don’t have to reside there..

Hi Beckie, I have a property in La Marina, and it is not just bars that are on the Urb, there are good restaurants and several supermarkets, including Iceland and Lidl. I know that Iceland employ english people, so perhaps if you went on line to enquire about employment, that would be an option until you could secure something more permanent.

I have to say, La Marina itself as a village is away from the 'urbanisation La Marina' which you and others posting on this thread seem to be referring to and which comes under a different region is very different. The village lies some 4Klm from the Urb and is a quaint little village which has been modernized in recent years and is near to the sea. It is quite Spanish although there are a lot of English living here. It would be a shame to see you miss out on looking at this lovely village which incidentally has an English academy which teaches the English curriculum and is growing.

One cannot and must not equate one with the other and there are some nice properties to rent and purchase here and the village has banks, restaurant, shops, restaurants, clinic etc and a camping resort just on the outskirts where you might even get employment. You really need to see for yourself. Good luck with your future life.

la marina urb and the village are both nice. I am in my mid 30s and bought a holiday home on the urb which we come out to every 2 months. We also learnt Spanish and yes you do need it on the urb unless you have no plans to speak to anyone other than a English person and they are not thank goodness everywhere! We have spanish neighbours & always speak to the shop keepers and resturant staff who are now friends in Spanish. Please do not be put off it is far from all English. It may use to have been but now there are many spanish, Germans, French, Swedish and English a friendly mixture with excellent facilities. We looked at many different areas before buying and this ticked most of the boxes for us my only advice is make sure you don’t go somewhere you may feel isolated or somewhere which closes down in the winter months. Good luck
