Hello, we are moving to La Marina in a few weeks.  We will be driving our main car but need to transport a 1973 VW Thing from Italy (Sarzana, SP) to La Marina. We have looked at many options but are hoping there is a local transport company that would consider this job.  The car is driveable, fully registered and insured but is not suitable for long distances.

Ideal would be someone with a car transporter trailer.

I had my Type 181 brought over from the UK by a really efficient chap - and at a good price. I don’t know whether he’d pick up in Italy but if he doesn’t he may know someone who does.
His name is John and you can call him on 07881013329 (UK#)

Thank you.  I will follow up with this.  Nice to know there is another ~Thing owner close by.

Best regards

Hello Ian

Don´t forget that you will have to change the registration to Spanish Historico at a cost of about 1100 euros...…

Kind regards

Richard

Thanks Richard, we have been investigating this registry for the car.  After the amount we have spent on the restoration, the cost for historic registration pales into insignificance!  It will just be a pleasure to finally run it around in a better climate.

Hi Ian

I am slightly taken aback!  Better climate than Italy?  You must have been up North!  If you need any pointers on rereg then let me know I am only down the road in Crevillent.  See you at the local classic car events!.

Kind regards

Richard.

I can see why you want to bring it with you. The Thing is a great motor.

Please don't expect the reg transfer to be straightforward.  It has just taken me 9 months to swop my UK Jeep.

Hi Ian

You don’t have to register the car on Historic plates – you can register it as per normal – the choice is up to you. Mine is on historic plates, one advantage is that the vehicle only needs to go through the MOT equivalent every 4 years, not annually.

I used Graham Shelton to deal with the whole of the transfer process - I can’t recommend him highly enough. Should you need him his # is 605319889 (Spanish#)

The car MUST be put on Historic plates.

Richard - that’s incorrect.
