Don't know if you're aware that Aldi sell mature and vintage cheddar cheese in, I think, 200g packs. Very nice.
I don't know if there is a really close Spanish alternative but Masymas do a nice one in packs and in a block on the deli counter. In my opinion it has a similar taste and consistency. Don't know the name but the label features a guy in early 17th century costume, like Guy Fawkes or Cervantes.

I like cheese.. After many years I can not tell a good cheddar from one to another. I am still working my way through the Spanish (beautiful) cheeses.
I´ll keep going.

I like cheese too but haven't found any Spanish cheeses to match a good English cheddar.
All the Spanish cheese I've had tend to be weak and very processed.

Steve, It´s all to do with one´s taste & preference of course but over 100 different varieties of Spanish cheeses with each region´s own specialties, its worth a look/taste at this very good guide:

Hi
Steve, I too have rejected many spanish cheeses I have tried. The best Ive found is 'Ok' & that's a semi curado ( blue wrapper) in Mercadona, some of the others are just alright for cooking.
Over 30 years ago, my daughters were both holiday reps in Spain & the Islands and always brought home Manchego which I still enjoy though it is quite expensive/
Cheers

Great read! I'll definitely be getting some of these cheeses in as Christmas treats 😋

Much better quality Spanish cheese is available from the more expensive supermarkets, such as Pepe La Sal, My Mércat, and Supercor which is owned by El Corte Inglés. They do tend to be more expensive. My friend always buys very good and interesting cheeses from small producers on the markets. In the Valencia region there are several artisan cheese makers, producing small amounts of high quality cheese, available usually on specialist food markets. One which we had recently was Torta de Cesar which is very similar to Vacherin.
