Hi. Have not been back to La Mata where we own a 3 bed apt. since last November. We adoped a Staffy in the UK so travel will be different now. If anyone has some advice I'd be grateful. Our previous way of travel was Ryanair>Alicante Airport>Bus to Torreviejanthen the A bus to La Mata but I am not sure if dogs and buses mix in Spain? I realise he is on 'that' breed so aware of muzzle regs and rabies - we have the travel requirements from Defra and he's up to date with jabs etc. It's the getting there which confuses me. I don't think Ryanair offers a hold space for pets. Looking also at driving from Portsmouth to Santander. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hello Dave

Afraid no animals  are allowed on  buses in this area  & even in taxis, you have to ask when you book as I know many drivers say No.

Ryanair UK never used to have hold space for pets, I would check at any airport you travel from & ask if any carriers take dogs( in crates) otherwise your travel options are limited.

Heres a list of commercial airlines that take pets in the hold

Hi,   I think you may find airlines that do take pets are very expensive and most pet owners take a Britany ferry from Uk to Santander or Calais and drive through France. We don't have a pet but travel by ferry and treat it as part of the adventure (also no hiring of vehicle in Spain). Should you be booking a ferry journey feel free to use our member code  S0267G, 0 is zero, surname Savage. It gets you 10% discount off ferry fare. Anyone else reading feel free to use too. Maybe help you a bit.

Regards

We always used Eurotunnel to Calais and drove down with dogs.  Lovely drive through France and most hotels are pet friendly.  Your doggie will be a lot happier driving with you than being in the hold of a plane.

I was thinking more along the driving route. Many thanks for the code too.

I can confirm that it is expensive to bring a dog to Spain by air, in 2015 when we moved here it cost us in excess of £700 + the cost of the crate and of course the vet costs, dont think we had any change out of £1000.

On the plus side our dog came through the whole experience unscathed, but word of warning when we went to collect her when we got to Alicante airport they stiffed us for €30 just to pick her up.

Hi Dave,

It is almost impossible to get a dog friendly cabin on the ferry. We drove over staying at the Holiday Inn Express in Folkestone which is dog friendly and only 5 mins from the tunnel. Through the tunnel the following day and then stayed in Bordeaux for the night and onwards to Spain the following day.

The dogs loved it and slept most of the journey.

Yep was considering this. Wondering what or when France will change their covid rules as they seem tighter than Spain's. This is why I wanted to avoid France - prefer to deal with 1 country + UK rather than 2, especially when the regs seem ever changing.

Hotel that we stayed in Bordeaux has ground floor, own entrance rooms so that other than reception you can keep away from others with plenty of drive throughs nearby
