H folks, just seeing Facebook posts about the boardwalk in La Mata being closed by the Ayuntamiento. Is there still access to the beach at some parts and what about all the lovely restaurants and businesses along the beach. I know the boardwalk is dangerous but surely it would make sense to close and repair a section at a time. Timing is awful with summer approaching and the money invested into the local campaign to promote La Mata businesses. We're hoping to get over again next month, thanks.

Thank you for your reply, that's a relief. From what I had read, it seemed that access was going to be difficult if not impossible!

I am absolutely shocked to read that part of the boardwalk at La Mata is closed.

The council spent a great deal of money completely replacing the boardwalk and railings opposite the restaurants two years ago.  The railings used to be completely different and new stainless steel railings were built to replace them, how could they now need to be replaced?  Please post a photograph for me to see as I am now back in the U.K. and would like to see where the problem is.  I came home 10days ago and while we were there, we used to walk the boardwalk everyday to La Mata for exercise and never saw any damage at all.

Thanks for telling us.

The rusty railings and wooden boardwalk were replaced with stainless steel and tiles at the Torreviega end of the beach in front of Vela Beach and Fusion restaurants a couple of years ago.

The area now closed is the other side of the sand dunes outside Alba Hostel and Valdes Restaurant which still has original wooden planks and very rusty railings.  It is only the wooden boardwalk which is closed.  Pedestrians can still walk along the road and visit restaurants and can access the beach at either end.

Thank you Very much for the speedy reply, now I know exactly what you are talking about. We had noticed the damage caused over Easter when the rain water gouged out a huge part of the walkway.

We love Valdes!  The new boardwalk will look wonderful but why the work couldn’t have been carried out over the winter is a puzzle.

We will be back again on 28th May and look forward to being in one of my favourite places.

We love Valdes  too!  I suspect La Mata suddenly and unexpectedly losing its blue flag beach status last week may have accelerated activity.  But still no certainty over if or when work will commence
