I purchased a small one bed apartment in July and pay apprix €13 per month for electric ( I visit the apartment for 3 days every 6-8 weeks) my husband and I stayed for ten days over Christmas and I’ve just received a bill for dec-jan for €140! This does seem excessive. Does anyone else think this is incorrect? Thanks

Thanks for your reply 😀 I turn the electric off at the mains every time I return to the uk so I guessed the €13 charge was about right for the 3 days we usually spend there?. Over Christmas it was cold and there is a small electric ladder style radiator on the bathroom wall and an electric regular looking radiator in the lounge which we did use quite a lot. I also did try to cook as I had a new electric oven installed but when i had the tv, the heating and the cooker in,  the electrics would trip out. We also lost the tv connection for a few days so only really had the heaters on and the lights. Peter, I think I used you to transport some stuff over for my Xmas arrival didn’t I?

Thanks for all this info Peter. I have a fuse box, that I have to flick the switch each time it trips. Someone else told me that an air con unit would be cheaper and more Suitable as we’ve got  two huge oscillating fans ready to use in the summer so I’m guessing that’ll be expensive too. And you’re right, I totally forgot about my water tank, it’s not big as I only get one shower from It 🙄. Thanks again for your suggestions, and I’m guessing it was another Peter knight who transported my stuff to Spain lol.

Hiya Katy,

Just to add to that very comprehensive reply from Peter, which provides some good tips and advice.

It is possible you have inherited your contract for Electricity from the previous occupier of your property and are on a very low contracted Power tarrif leading to exceeding your total allowable electricity load usage when you switch on a number of Electrical Appliances. This can be modified / increased by your Electricity supplier if you so wished.

Do you pay a set amount each month at €13 euros or do you pay other amounts throughout the year.

If you are on the set amount per month scheme then the larger bill could be The Electricity company recovering underpayments for the last year , as the scheme allows them to do.

LeckyLes.

I don’t have a smart meter, just the fuse box just inside the door. I bought the apartment last summer from a guy who lives in London and hadn’t used it or rented it out for years. After the purchase, he only received a small sum of the price from the solicitors as apparently he owed lots of money for unpaid services, unsure if electricity was one of them. My bills always tend to be €13 except for this big one recently. I pay a company a fixed sum to assist with any paperwork or questions I may have, they are my solicitors and offered this service at the time of my property purchase so I think I may make use of my contract with them and ask them to look into it for me 🙄 Thanks again for everyone’s help and advice 👍

Hiya Katy,

Thanks for the feedback.  If your Bill's are usually 13 euros a month it does seem to bear out my Earlier theory of you having a ' Set amount  per month ' form of contract and the above average charge this time being the adjusted settlement for the year

Good idea on sorting it via your solicitor , good luck !
