Hi I arrived in Spain at the end of October driving my 2009 uk registered Peugeot.  I have had a quote to register it in Spain if 850 Euro.  Could anyone tell me if the Spanish insurance on a rhd car with Spanish plates is cost prohibitive?   My other option is to purchase a Spanish registered car when I return to the UK at Christmas and drive it down but I've heard you still need to sort admin for change of ownership.  Also, Used Spanish cars are expensive.  My current car equivalent is 2000 euros more expensive in Spain..  I would prefer to retegister my current car and get a couple more years out if it even if it means it is worthless at the end.Any advice appreciated.

We have 2 RHD British registered cars in Spain (we will change them to Spanish plates in the new year).

We insured them in Spain with http://www.britannialegals.com/    (Liberty Seguros).

The cost was equal/lower than we paid in the UK.

The costs may reduce a bit when the cars are switched to Spanish plates.

Correction - we have 1 RHD car and 1 LHD car in Spain (both UK registered) ... it was late when I made my previous reply

I totally agree with PeteKnight's very good advice.

Is it really worth all the bother/expense for a car as old as that, however fond of it you may be? Like he says, RHD cars on Spanish plates are a "white elephant" and difficult to sell - the Spanish people won't want it, and any Brit buying a car in Spain will naturally go for a LHD one.

Just my two pennyworth, but I would say just bite the bullet, sell it in UK and buy a Spanish car out here. I reckon you'll be glad you did.

Geoff.

Thanks for all your advice. Very helpful.  If I decide to register it I had accepted the car will not be worth anything when it comes to selling.

You don't have a choice on whether or not to register it - you're legally obliged to do so.

Thanks Jimmy.  I know I will need to register it if i decide to keep it and not sell it or take it back to UK.

One of the main disadvantages of a RHD car are the toll roads and

car park barriers, particularly if you are on your own

In the car.

I imported a  new car from UK, the import tax(?} was 3,500€! The headlights were 350€ each and it came to 4K€ all together.

If I had know previously I would not have done it.
