We are currently on holiday in La Siesta, we arrived on Friday 27 September, I have just counted a total of 25 mosquito bites on myself and my partner has 12 bites also. We have used repellant but this obviously has not worked. Can anyone suggest the best repellant to use?

We are visiting the area as we are searching for a holiday home and we thought La Siesta was the place we wanted to buy, but due to this situation, we are now having serious doubts. Having travelled to various places in Spain we have never had this problem before, maybe the odd one during a 2 week stay somewhere but to have this after 2 days is worrying, we would appreciate your comments.

Thanks Jill

I feel your pain we were in same situation last weeks, it's due to the floods a couple of weeks ago,  they are laying their eggs in the water and are hatching now ! When we sat outside we put fans out as mozzies are bad fliers and cant fly into the wind when its blowing we found it worked but when they wanna get you they will get you! Dont let it put you off the storm was the worst in 140 years !!

As others have said you have arrived when the outlying areas have been devastated by floods with loss of life and cars and homes swept away, the worst in over 100 years. It is not usual for the areas such as Dolores, Almoradi and Catral to be flooded to this extent but floodgates had to be opened to avoid even more catastrophic failings in the system. Much of this area still has standing water, the perfect breeding ground for mozzies.
The Gota Fría brings flash flooding about twice a year (Spring and Autumn) and parts of La Siesta and the Torretas get hit by flood water surging down from the CV905 to the pink lake. Of course you will get many people in those areas who have never flooded but every year the same posts come up with people needing pumps and the same headlines in the papers and the same footage on social media.
It also happens in other built up areas, beaches get washed away, streets and houses get flooded on a regular basis depending on where the bulk of the rain falls and much of coastal Spain can be at risk.

We'd been visiting Spain a couple of times each of 15 years, before we moved here permanently just over 3 years ago, and we have never experienced mosquitoes in the numbers caused by the Gota Fria flooding a couple of weeks ago.

I agree with Pete, DEET is the most effective solution to prevent being bitten.  As you've already been bitten, the best after-bite I've used is "Fenistil", a clear gel which you can get from a Farmacia.  Rub it into the bite as soon as you get bitten and then reapply if it should start to itch again - brilliant stuff!

Kind regards,

Kim

Hello

You have to consider the geography of the place that you are looking for.   On the flood plain you can expect mozzies and flies, you have to go uphill in order to avoid them.  We live in Crevillent which has experienced flooding in the areas in the direction of Catral (flood plain) but absolutely nothing near the town which is elevated.    This year I have had 2 bites which is more than I have had in the past 3 years.....

If the road that you are driving on is higher than the surrounding land then you are on a flood plain......

We live inland further North tow ards Valencia. Mosquitos are unfortunately a fact of life and we are harassed enormously every year - although, curiously, up until the rainstorms, they were not quite so bad in this area this year.

I would echo above advice - the only thing that works is full on chemical warfare!!!! And they’ve got many more troops than you - you have to be ruthless. When venturing outside slather yourself with repellent of the Deet variety and always have with you some Fenostil or Anthisan (which friends bring me from UK as nothing else works for me) to apply immediately.

Indoors always have the electric plugin repellents - especially overnight in the bedroom. We also have one of the scaled down ‘blue light’ machines, like those used in catering establishments, permanently on in the kitchen - otherwise I simply can’t go in there. Try not to keep doors and windows open for the obvious reason, and if you do, make sure you have adequate mosquito nets fitted. You wil also find that in the very hot months, keeping your doors and windows closed with blinds drawn is a very efficient way of keeping the house cooler - this is why most old Spanish houses are dark inside.

Thank you for all your comments, they have proved truly useful. We applied 30% DEET tonight and NO mozzie bites received! So maybe we have found a solution. We also have some good cream from the pharmacy also that is easing the pain and itchyness from previous bites! Maybe La Siesta is the place for us, been house hunting today 😃 thanks again.

Hi, Run a teaspoon under hot water and place on bite. This takes out the itch reduces the swelling as the hot  spoon disperses the proteins and enzymes that the mozzies have injected into you, I promise it works 😎
