Hi, we have just had a kitchen fitted from Ikea to include a Sile Stone Worktop (total cost of kitchen €10,000, of which 2,500 was for the worktop. The kitchen was finished today, but hey ho no worktop.  We went into Ikea, only to be told, that the worktop fitters will call us to arrange for them to measure for the worktop - really ? This kitchen was ordered on 8th July, and they are only telling us this now. Also they say it will take between 6/8 days after the measuring before the worktop will be ready. (Are they even on this planet).  We were not told any of this when ordering the kitchen.  We have been without a kitchen since last Thursday, - 6 days, with no sink, dishwasher, fridge, or cooking facilities, and are now being told that it will be at best, another 10 days before we have a working kitchen. Has anyone else had this problem when ordering a Sile stone worktop ?  We are so annoyed about this, and are waiting now to hear back from Customer Services in Ikea.

Thanks Ray, yes that is quite possible, however I feel that Ikea should have informed us that this was the case, and not leave it until the new kitchen is in place.  The kitchen installer took all the measurements for everything, so we had assumed that the worktop manufacturers would have gone by this. Its just I am so annoyed, and it really is quite difficult to work with no kitchen.

Thank you for your help.

Marie

Hi Marie

Yes. This is quite common! If you are not having stock worktop from IKEA then typically the process is drawn out.

The measuring up for the worktops is only complete once all the units are installed. This is typical because, when there is a problem,  the worktop supplier blames the kitchen installer, who blames the person who measured up etc...

It is a little late in the day for me to be suggesting about the management and timing of the project as that does not help you, however, you should be able to have some functionality within the kitchen despite not having a worktop!

Your dishwasher, fridge and cooking facilities (except a hob of course) should all have the ability to function without a worktop installed. Presumably, they are in position already anyway?

As an aside, for the numerous kitchen installs I have done, the planning and disruption can be kept to a minimum and I even try to provide a temporary solution/appliance fix (for items such as sinks and hobs) until such time the worktop is installed.

Can the installer not utilise some of your old worktops or create temporary fixings for the sink and hob?

If you are REALLY struggling then feel free to contact me and I would be happy to assist with the temporary measures, bearing in mind I am not looking to take the bread off someone else's table!

Hope that helps

Thank you for your offer, much appreciated. Ikea was in touch with us today, and it appears that when the kitchen was ordered, they forgot to order the worktop. They say the Stone company will be ringing us tomorrow and will take measurements, and will make the worktop urgently. So fingers crossed.

Marie.
