I live on El Limonar and will need to register with a GP.  What do I need to bring with me?

Hi Pete,

Thank you, you have been most helpful.  I arrived here two months ago to live out here permanently.  No-one told me I would have to get an EHIC card.  I just assumed I would find a GP, show my passport and proof of address etc and carry on as I would in England.  Seems that is not the case. I am diabetic and arthritic just to name two.  I have no problem with paying for medication I was doing that in England anyway.

Pete - I disagree.

EHICs used to be issued by your country of residence, and we had Spanish ones originally. Then the system changed and we had to get UK EHICs.

I'd point out to the OP that, apart from not finding out what's involved before moving to Spain, an EHIC can only be used for emergency treatment. If a medical centre give you non-emergency treatment on the basis of an EHIC, and then try to claim the cost back from the UK, the UK will refuse to pay, and you could end up getting a bill from the Valencian health authority. It doesn't happen very often, but it has on a number of occasions.
