I would urge everyone to be aware to check their change and how much they give over the counter. I have been short changed four times in the past week at various locations, the first few for a few euros. The latest for 40 euro at the barbers at paddy's point.  The sad part is they don't even question you when you complain blatant theft, how much per day are they making. Beware

I thought I was the only one who thought this but it is a good point!

It’s happened to me several times over the years and although embarrassing to pull them up I have always got my money back!  I think when the locals are on circ €5 per hour then a tenner or twenty “accidentally “ slipped out of your change goes a long way !

I now make sure if iam only having a drink anyway that I have a small note only to pay and then it’s harder for the short changing to happen. They know your a foreigner and some seize on the opportunity......unfortunately not all are the same and overall they are pretty good  but be on your guard! Also I pay for most meals by card now and leave a tip in cash!

I have a special card that gives the highest exchange rate with NO charges, even cash withdrawals are charge free. I can buy a 2€ coffee with it. I tend to use that most of the time as you say.

Halifax clarity and transferwise (I have both).....google them or look up Martin Lewis and see what you think. The Halifax card I use all the time and can’t fault it, the transferwise has only just arrived, on the face of it offers the same but I’ve yet to try it.

My wife has an aqua card and she is happy with that also

Had this situation in La Zenia, I had just arrived and had only 50 Eu banknotes, paid for goods for 16 EU and got coins back. I immidietly said I had given her 50 EU and she just said no. The store was suppose to call me when the store closes so the can check if there is 30 EU more then sold goods but of course they did not call.

It was the underware and clothing store on the right side of Zara home. So annoying, I am 100% sure I gave her 50 because I only had 50 banknotes since I just arrived and this was the first money I spent. The girl seemed a little tierd (or sick of her job) maybe she really thought I was mistaken and she was right but that does not excuse why she did not call me later like she said she would.
