Hi

We've recently bought a holiday home near La Zenia and hire a car each time we visit.  Can you recommend any driving schools who offer lessons to help UK drivers learn how to drive safely and confidently in Spain?

Thank you.

Hi,

save your money. Just go out gradually increasing the distance and time you spend driving. Be cautious at roundabouts until you get used to them. Don't try and second guess other drivers, you will have maybe already noticed that a lot do not indicate and can cross lanes. Trust me when I say you will soon be comfortable driving here, the traffic flows quite well driving on the right. Take your time, the roads are quiet just now and don't let other drivers intimidate you.

Best of luck,

Adrian.

Thanks Adrian

I guess it's just a case of practice and learning Spain's highway code?

We were a bit too ambitious on our recent trip and drove to Ikea at Murcia one evening.  Let's just say we did a few too many circuits of some roundabouts!  It terrified me...but as you say, starting locally on quieter roads is probably wiser.

That's it, practice is all it is. If you have nowhere special to be just give yourself 10 or 20 minutes on days you can. Confidence will quickly come and you will be as good as anyone out there.

Hello,

A friend, with a holiday home  tried to book 'brush up/confidence ' lessons here for her husband & learned....This type of lesson can only be given in your own car & not instructors cars & most instructors were just spanish speaking. Made her decision very easy haha but he's slowly doing ok now.

Cheers

Hi A,

If you're hiring a car each time you come to Spain that's a good start as you'll be sat on the correct side of the car.  To familiarise yourself with Spanish signs, signals and traffic law, this is a great website, run by volunteers from the Guardia Civil police.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi A

Don't let the experience of trying to get to Ikea put you off, I have been hiring cars in Spain for over 30 years and did the same thing as you did.

Remember when you first passed your driving test in the UK ? It all felt a little strange at first, everyone goes through it and your confidence builds gradually, this will happen in Spain too, take your time and practice a little more each day, you did it in the UK and you will do it in Spain.

Good luck, Ken.

Not all roundabouts are like the one near Ikea. Best stick to the inside lane at roundabouts unless turning left. That way you don't get other drivers cutting across you.
