I hold an irish passport, and I was wondering if I need to apply for residency if I want to relocate permanently. Am I entitled to use the Spanish health care? Someone actually told me that I need to prove I have enough to live on if I wanted buy a house and live in Spain. Is that correct or have I been misinformed?

As a EU citizen you need not to ·"apply" for residence and just register as such after living here for 6 months. You can speed up things obtaining from your nearest Spanish Consulate a so called "NIE" (Tax-ID), which is a bit tricky to get here and anything but fast.

Are you Irish, or a "Brit with an Irish passport" ?
Either way, as an Irish passport holder your process will be the same as Brits had (up to end 2020). If you want to live in Spain permanently you will need to
- apply for Residency - you need to demonstrate that you have somewhere to live, a qualifying income (not a high figure) and healthcare. You can apply after you arrive here
- if you are below your country's retirement age, you will need private healthcare (and you can, if you choose, pay into the Spanish NHS after that)
I think, technically, you should apply if you intend to stay >90 days (your application should be submitted). Once you have Residency, you will become liable for income tax in Spain.

Thanks
Your country of origin (British or Irish) dictates who will pay for your healthcare, if you are of qualifying age.
If you are not of qualifying age ...
- If you get a job in Spain with a contract, you will qualify for Spanish NHS.
- Or you can gain access to the Spanish NHS by becoming self-employed (Autonomo).

I don’t think you need to take out private insurance if your Irish. You are covered under the EHIC .

Look up the Irish government web site. Lots of information on there.

The EHIC only covers emergency treatment for holidays. If you live in Spain you’ll need to get private insurance or join the Spanish system if eligible.
