Settee and armchair covers

What is the best way to cover settees and armchairs so they look smart?
I have the waffle cotton covers from the Chinese shops, but they are not heavy enough and quickly look rumpled. In addition, the covers sold are too small for the big settee, so I have to use two covers. Yhey very soon drift apart and the whole thing looks a mess.
I realise the best thing would be to do without covers, but given our climate, I would love to find a solution.
I would be so grateful for any ideas! Thanks in advance!
