Recently bought an older property and we had the pool refurbed We were not aware until recently that the backwash from the pool cleaning historically is piped into the street - our neighbour is complaining about it What are we obliged to do ?

It depends on your town hall. Most municipalities don't allow the discharge of water onto the streets.
Everyone I know with a pool, ourselves included, has a soakaway in the garden. That's just a pit filled with stones, some weed control membrane on top, then soil on top of that. If you just backwash for a minute or so to clean the filter, a soakaway will work fine. If you ever need to drain the pool, then you're going to flood the garden, so it's best to do this over a few days.
The alternative is to tap into a sewerage pipe, but don't tell anyone you're doing it.
