If you are a UK pensioner and receiving UK pension you can apply for healthcare paid by the UK government under the S1 healthcare scheme. You will be entitled to full healthcare as any Spanish resident.

I would recommend speaking to Alfonso from Gran Alacant Insurance, he’s highly recommended on this forum and has been a godsend to us during the last 12 months. He’s gone beyond the call of duty when it’s come to booking appointments for us & thanks to our cover with Salus we had wellbeing checks last April and a very large malignant tumour was picked up on my husband’s kidney. After several scans/MRI’s they removed the kidney in September and will scan him every 3 months for the next 2 years. Because of this I would recommend the higher cover of the ones on offer as it covers chemotherapy which we were told can run into 10s of thousands of euros. Hopefully you would never need this treatment. Hope this is helpful.

Hi,

PHI here in Spain in my opinion is not expensive for what you get as it includes all care, which is emergency and diagnostic/general health care. The emergency care includes ambulances cover.

Therefore whichever one you go for you must be careful to scrutinise the small print for pre-existing conditions and length of time before certain conditions are covered. This can be very costly if there is something you don't declare or have an issue with early in your policy incept. With so many companies offering PHI the prices are very competitive between them which can look very attractive, however a close look will soon show why its so cheap !

My advice would be, don't necessarily go for the cheapest, and go for one that gives you the shortest time before everything is covered.

We have had a great service from Salus, and used it, both in emergency and general health, we have taken advantage of the well man/woman checks which have been comprehensive. We went for the full cover gold policy which is just over 2000 euros a year for both of us and are in our third year.
