We live in the campo, virtually in the forest. Yesterday Arthur saw a bird in the early evening which he’s never seen before and which doesn’t seem to be in any online reference. It was pure white with bright red flashes on and under the wings. And about the size of a pigeon.

Any knowledgeable person to tell us what it is please? Can’t post a picture, as always, no camera o hand when you need it!

Many thanks.

I've forgotten most of my bird knowledge, but that description doesn't ring any bells.

If I saw such a bird in my area, it would be a cock pigeon that's used to take part in 'first to have its way with the female' competitions. Although most of the pigeons are the usual grey colour, a few are pure white.

The pigeon fanciers paint their birds different colours, so they can tell from a distance which bird is the winner after the female is released. And you can tell a pigeon fancier by the paint on his fingers.

And actually, Jim, on thinking about it, I now remember that last year some people in the same area as us saying that they had a strange bird apparently living in a tree in their garden for some time; it may have been the same one? In which case presumably it does live locally, and your suggestion may well be correct!

I doubt it would be the same, as the paint would have worn off by now or the feathers would have been replaced by new ones. There are a lot of escapees however, so there's still a possibility it may be a pigeon. We once had an escapee which refused to budge from our roof - until the owner came along with a female, kept in train with a bit of string attached to its leg, and the escapee was then tempted down from the roof and unceremoniously stuck in it's detached residence, i.e. pigeon box, at the bottom of the field opposite us.

I just hope you have another sighting to help identify it.

Well, we’ll have to see what happens, it may come again! We are too far out for any owners to come searching, so hope it found its way home! thank you, S

Hi Stephanie,

If You google `Spains Painted Pigeons` you might well see some birds similar to the bird Arthur

saw.        Regards.
