Hi everyone

I need some unbiased advice please from people who know far more technically than me!

We have, apart from the invaluable iPads, an old PC running W7 which we used for our business. This ran WordPerfect 15 Office, to which I was accustomed having used it since it’s early days. Also had an all bells and whistles Photoshop 6 for my husband's use. We also have a refurbished Toshiba laptop, effectively duplicating the PC, which I bought to use in the interim before removers arrived to tie up loose ends of the business and all the usual final stuff with accountants etc.

Both of these seem to have died more or less simultaneously. The laptop is totally none responsive, even when plugged in, just black, nothing, nada. The PC attempts to heave itself into life, succeeds and two seconds later dies again. I take it there is nothing I can do to retrieve any data and that it’s not worth trying to repair them?

We kept them, albeit not used v often these days, because they were useful. I am not overthrilled at the thought of having to buy a new laptop and subscribing to new software as I understand one may not purchase it outright now? I can buy a current version of W Perfect Office at some 300 Eu which these days I neither need nor can justify, I just want their word processor! And we don’t really want to have to subscribe to Photoshop when what we had was perfectly adequate!

So I suppose what I’m asking is, can anything be done to salvage any data, are they repairable, or is it simply not worth the effort and I have to shut up and buy new?

Thanks for any thoughts and advice

Kr

Stephanie

I can't comment on data retrieval or whether or not it's worth repairing your equipment, I'll leave that to the experts.

For word processing, Apache OpenOffice is free and a good alternative to Microsoft Office. Try it before you commit to paying for something else.

Thank you Myra, I will take a look at it, we haven’t decided on anything yet

Thank you

Hi Stephanie,

There are a number of open source software packages available.  I use LibreOffice, which is also free.  Here´s a summary which you may find helpful:

Kind regards,

Kim

Thank you, Kimmy. I will look at these when we’ve decided what to do; I do know there is stuff out there, just whether or not we even need s laptop given iPad functionality. Interested in people’s views.

All technical devices become sooner or later obsolete. The same happens to operating systems and all types of software. W7 is definitely out of date, and those having spent a fortune on the various windows versions will have to pay again for a coming soon W11. Any computer should be scrapped after 10 years. Buy a new one, preferrably bare bone w/o OS and install open source Ubuntu distribution of your choice. It runs much more stable and is less sensitive to security issues. Keep your keyboard, mouse, and monitor or substitute the latter with an older TV. Happy computing.

Many thanks for this, killjoy, it confirmed my own view. I take it there’s no chance of retrieving any data?

Just one little correction to avoid unnecessary confusion to people who may already be confused.

Windows 11 will be a FREE upgrade to everyone with a Win 10 license. Only people buying a new computer will have to pay... as they would for a new machine with Win 10

Hi

Before you start replacing the laptop, try replacing the charger. That may be the problem.

Cheers
