Hi, we have our NLV visa now which expires inAugust this year so I’m now considering what is now required for the 2 year extension. We have health insurance for the first year and as my husband is of retirement age and receives a state pension, is he able to now register for an S1 for the 2nd and third year and not therefore be required to take out healthcare again. Also as his wife but not yet of pensionable age can I also ‘piggy back’ off my husbands S1. I know we could do this before Brexit but not sure now? Can anyone enlighten me please?

You cannot get a second year extension for the NLV...
When you gain the NLV You are supposed to apply for residency within the first 90 days of arrival in Spain.
After the first year of legal residency and reaching UK pensionable age and receiving UK pension you can apply for the S1 healthcare cover which you as his wife will be able to Piggy Back on his application.

Thanks for this info Steve. I think my message was a bit confusing. When I said I have NLV , I meant that we’ve give through that process and now have residency and now considering requirements for the 2 year extension, but Thankyou again. That’s what I wanted to know about the S1.

Do you happen to know what the cost is. Obviously the first time around was 525 euros each for the visa, is it just a small amount for the 790 052 tax ?

I'm sorry cabsam I can't help you with that question as I've not got the full information but someone will be along shortly with the answers.
Well done for getting this far 👏

Thanks Steve 👍
Cabsam,
I have just found this that you might find interesting:
What is the renewal process for the non-lucrative visa in Spain?
The non-lucrative visa is renewable for two additional two-year periods. This gives you a total of six years as a NLV holder.
• Initial Visa > 2 years
• Renewal 1 > 2 years
• Renewal 2 > 2 Years
The renewal process will follow a similar process to the application, with a couple of crucial differences.
• You must have lived more than 183 days in Spain in each year of the visa. This requirement can have tax implications.
• You can apply in Spain.
• The financial requirement is 800% of the IPREM (to cover the full two years).
• If you have kids of school-going age, you’ll need to show they attended school.
After 5 years you become eligible for permanent residency.

In point of fact if at the time of the grant of your visa you are entitled to an S1 you can register it, and therefore benefit from state health care, from the day after you arrive in Spain and receive your residency/TIE which means you will be covered both by your private scheme AND the S1.
This is a nonsensical, if not 'Kafkaesque' quirk of the system where, whilst possession of (or just entitlement to) an S1 is of itself definitive evidence of health insurance courtesy of the NHS it is only deemed effective by Spain once it is registered with INSS which of course can't be done until you are officially resident - for which you must demonstrate health insurance already in place and that means private!
Put another way, for an S1 beneficiary technically private insurance is only actually necessary for the first 30 days or so which is how long it should take to get your TIE and then register the S1 with INSS.
Some heads need banging together!
Thankyou Darro. It cost us jointly €2800 for the year for the private cover, what a waste of money. I just need to find out now what the costs/fees are this time around??
