Hi

My wife and I hope to retire to Torrevieja sometime this year, both retired

Do we need an initial entry visa to enter Spain and then apply for residencia or must this be done in the UK, if so does it take long to process is it easier with a solicitor

Thank you

Darrel

Hi Darrel,

The visa process has to be started in the UK at the Spanish Consulate, although their website says that the office is temporarily closed.

The Non-Lucrative Visa lasts for 3 months and 15 days, during which you apply for the initial Permit.  This is for 1 year and can be extended for 2 years - if you apply to renew the permit twice, i.e. 1 year + 2 years + 2 years, thereby living in Spain for a total of 5 years, you then achieve what the UK call "settled status" and the Spanish call "Residencia Permanente".  At this 5 year point, you no longer have to apply for further permits, as you're entitled to stay indefinitely.

I believe that you have to prove the financials and healthcare provision for Third Country Nationals at the initial application and also for each renewal, until you achieve permanent residency.

Kind regards,

Kim
