We own a property in Los Balcones in Torrevieja and arrived in Spain on 14th August to start the process for residency so we can enjoy our early retirement..

We have an appointment on 14th September to get registered on the Padrón.

We have had over €25k in our Spanish bank for the last 3 months so thought we’d be able to start the application for residency as soon as we had the Padrón. We also are ready to go with Private Health Care once we know a date to start it from.

I’ve been advised by my solicitor that he can’t start our Residency Application for myself and my wife yet as we only arrived on 14th August and although we have had more than enough funds in our Bankinter account for the last 3 months the authorities will want to see payments going out of the account for the next 2-3 months as well.

Although we don’t have a digital signature yet I thought our solicitor would be able to use theirs for the 1st part of the application process as they also have Power of Attorney for us as well.

Just wanted to check because if thoughts are that we could start the process once we have the Padrón, I want to ask my solicitor to start the application process and see what happens..

Any thoughts, suggestions or advice would be most welcome.

Thanks

BAZ

It will be for the authorities to see that you are actually living in Spain and making it your home. Some holiday home owners are trying to get residency cards before end of the year then going back to the UK to live. You can't have both residency in the UK and Spain.

It doesn't cost anything to make the initial application on EX-20, so think about instructing your solicitor to make an online application and see if that is accepted.

"You can't have both residency in the UK and Spain"

 That's not quite true.

You can become resident in Spain, as you must after 90 days, but by staying for under 183 days avoid becoming fiscally resident, that's what you can't be in two places.

In that circumstance you can continue to live in UK exactly as before but visit Spain for up to 183 days instead of just 90.

Hi Baz, is it 2-3 months duration of money going out of your account ,as if you own your own property then surely this would already be happening through any direct debits or utility payments etc ?

Hi Les,

I've been paying utility bills through my bank since last November but my solicitor said they would like to see living expenditure coming out of the account to show we're here..

I think I'm going to ask my solicitor to make the initial application as soon as I have the Padron and see what happens..

Thanks

BAZ

Hi, I had my residency appointment this morning at Alicante, The necessary paper work I was asked to supply was,

A Padron less than 3 months old. N.I.E certificate. Private health insurance certificate, receipt of payment and policy. The latest 3 months of Spanish bank statements stamped and signed by the Bank. The latest 3 months of UK bank statements, no official stamp or signature necessary. The last 3 months of Private pension payments into either bank accounts, including payslips and a official letter from your pension provider, Google translated will do. Your Passport and full copies of every page in passport in A4 Size and black and white. Also 2 genuine and recent passport sized photos required. It is worth you to keep all genuine documents and supply 1 copy of all above to hand over at the appointment desk, I personally copied everything twice. I was informed that all paperwork was in order, signed and stamped by the person and to return next Friday to have my fingerprints taken, appointment necessary. After that I would be asked to attend another appointment in 3 weeks? at a different office to collect my T.I.E card where fingerprints will be taken again, as you have to collect in person.

Hi Peter,

Were you applying for the first time, or swapping your residency certificate for a TIE please?  If the former, what financial requirements did you have to meet?

Friends of mine have applied for the first time, but don't have their appointment until next week.  We've been waiting for feedback from first-time applicants, as it will be helpful to many others on this forum.

Many thanks and regards,

Kim

Hi, yes my first time, I was informed that I needed 9000 Euro in my Spanish bank account and having the bonus of a private pension was sufficient.
