Good morning Forum(ers)

Hope you all well and staying safe. We recently visited Playa Flamenca for the purpose of looking at properties and decided that Los Dolses area is the best based upon the walking distance to shops and beach. Is the area safe? We also saw lots of green areas around Los Dolses, is this going to end up being built on? Any views?

Thanks, Shamil

Hi Shamil

I've lived in the general area for around ten years and although crime exists of course, it's no worse than anywhere else - me and the missus feel perfectly safe just taking the usual precautions of locking up at night and not leaving valuables unguarded in bars etc.

Re green areas - who knows? Don't rely on them staying green. As an example, what was once our favourite beach bar sat in a protected area, until the council decided it was illegal and closed it down. So what happened next? They built a high rise tower block on top of it!

Cheers

Steve

Thank you Steve.  The estate agent said it was protected “farmland” but I must admit, I did not think that sounded true, but this will dissuade us from buying.  Since we are looking at a permanent move, what about medical facilities, we saw there was a dental clinic around Zenia.  We are looking at walking distances because we will not be able to use our U.K. licences unfortunately. Thanks again

The Commercial centre is somewhat tired and run down which does make the area look neglected.

There has been talk of apartments being built on the area where the school once stood and there is a pocket of land opposite that is likely to be built on at sometime in the future. The Orihuela Council seem hell bent on building on anywhere and everywhere at present without the infrastructure to cope, the roads cant cope with the extra traffic these builds bring likewise the health centres are being overwhelmed by all the extra demands on them.

I live in this area and love it. I suspect that all those open spaces will be built on in the future. It's a great area to live in if you're not drivers. You can walk to the Boulevard, there are dentists within walking distance, it's a good walk to the beach but the return is uphill and a bit of a struggle in summer when it's boiling hot, I like the canal for walking. If you really like the area then check out places like Verdemar, Valencias and around Pau 8 where the properties have gardens, hedges and there are communal gardens.

Thank Myra for the heads-up. Yes the distance to shops is important. The only thing I am struggling to ascertain of there are any local GPs around. But other than that, the area appears to be ideal. We were only in Playa Flamenca for 3 days mind you, so we have a lot of research to do. Any heads-up on Doctors would be gratefully appreciated.

Regards, Shamil

PS - we also found out the PetsWorld have Vets too so our little dog is sorted, lol

The state health centre is in Cabo Roig. Is a fair walk from Los Dolses, ok if you're healthy, impossible if you're sick but there are taxis if you don't want to drive. It's worth researching the annual cost of a vehicle versus what you would pay for taxis. Sometimes it's more economical to just use cabs. There's a private doctor close to the helath centre, there might be others in the area but I don't know about that. You can have shopping delivered from Alcampo for 7€, order the boring heavy stuff online and have it delivered.

Thanks Myra, that’s fantastic news. For the first year, we need private health care but hopefully from year 2 we can join the convinio especial ( hope that is correctly spelt).  I think the idea of using taxis as and when we need it v/s the car is good too,  The way things are as such post brexit, we will need for a theory and practical test to get driving licence in Spain as U.K. driving licence is not valid for new residents post Jan 2021.  There has been talk about reciprocal arrangement for driving but I am not hopeful that this will be done in time for us.
