HI all, I am currently in Spain but normally live in Ireland.  We are going to UK in December (travel permitting) for Christmas with family and then on to Ireland hopefully in January.  We intend to take wine and cigarettes bought and paid for in Spain to Ireland for our own personal consumption.  However, we will be in UK before Ireland and in January, the UK is no longer in the EU.  Will I still be able to take my wine and cigarettes to Ireland, if I am going from UK?  Or will I have to leave UK before the end of the year?  All help welcome.  Thank you.

Hi Cath,

I don't think any of us could answer your question at the moment, because I don't think the UK government knows the answer yet!  I'd recommend bookmarking this link on the Gov.UK website and signing up for email alerts, so you'll be advised of developments as they happen:

https://www.gov.uk/duty-free-goods

If there's a similar website for the Irish government, I'd recommend looking at that too.  You may not have any trouble getting your goods out of the UK after 1 January, but getting them into Ireland may be a different matter, depending on what is finally agreed (if anything!) between the UK and the EU.

I'd also recommend keeping the receipts for your purchases, to prove that you bought them in Spain while the UK was still subject to EU rules.  If your permanent home is in Ireland, in theory you're transiting your goods via the UK, and they will ultimately end up back in the EU (Ireland), so perhaps it won't be an issue - but that's just my personal opinion ;o)

Kind regards,

Kim
