Denunciation and Guardia Civil

My wife has lost her residency certificate and we have been told we have to go to Guardia Civil and do a denunciation whatever that is. Has anyone ever had to do this. Do I just go to the station. Presumably I need to take an interpreter with me as I dont speak enough Spanish. Any advice would be appreciated.
